Kingfisher completed the full EPC retrofit of a 65‑meter second‑hand Ro‑Ro ship and delivered it to Cape Verde in just three months. Covering design, procurement and construction, the project upgraded accommodation, achieved SOLAS safety compliance, and implemented green improvements including LED lighting and all‑electric galley, transforming the aged vessel into a modern, safe and comfortable Ro‑Ro ship.

Kingfisher was appointed by a reliable client to carry out the upgrade of a 24-year-old second-hand Ro-Ro vessel built in Japan.

We retrieved all paper drawings available on-board and generated CAD drawings to support the upgrade engineering works and found a shipyard to execute the complete retrofit project.

1. Improved Living Comfort for Crew and Passengers

Accommodation spaces are fitted with vacuum toilets and showers. Outdated standing-only facilities have been replaced with proper seating, and air-conditioning is installed throughout all accommodation areas.

Crew are provided with private cabins with en-suite bathrooms, delivering a substantial improvement to day-to-day living conditions.

For passengers, newly-designed VIP cabins, a bar, on-board Wi-Fi and dedicated passenger-area seats significantly enhance travel comfort and convenience.

2. Sailing Safety & SOLAS Compliance

Safety and regulatory compliance form the core of this vessel refit:

- Cargo lashing and securing manual: Vehicles and cargo are secured in accordance with approved standards for enhanced safety and full regulatory compliance.

- Life rafts and life-raft davits: Fitted in compliance with SOLAS requirements for safeguarding life at sea.

- Rescue boat and davit: Newly added for emergency response, also fully SOLAS-compliant.

- AMS (Alarm and Monitoring System): Provides automated monitoring and alarm functions for main and auxiliary engines for safer and more reliable vessel operation.

- Newly-installed CCTV and AP systems enhance navigation safety while bringing greater convenience for both crew and passengers.

3. Green-Focused Upgrades

- Full-vessel LED lighting is implemented, together with EU-standard power sockets adapted to local usage patterns, delivering improved energy efficiency and environmental performance.

- The galley has been converted from LPG-fueled operation to fully-electric galley equipment. This offers greater convenience for crew, alongside cleaner and safer operation.

Kingfisher delivered the complete EPC scope--engineering, procurement and construction--transforming this ageing second-hand vessel into a modern, comfortable unit. The upgraded ship meets full SOLAS requirements and supports greener operations, enabling safe, comfortable and enjoyable voyages for crew and passengers alike.
